Marli Visagie – VITA NOVA PRETORIA

Marli specialises in Teenager, Student and Young Adult counselling in Pretoria.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology, which I completed in 2021, and I am currently pursuing my Honours in Psychology. Alongside my academic studies, I have actively engaged in professional development through HUMANITAS, where I have completed courses, such as working with Couples, The HUMANITAS course, and working with Teenagers. My goal is to specialize in PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and Trauma, as I am deeply committed to assisting individuals in their journey towards healing and recovery. Additionally, I am a registered wellness counsellor with the ASCHP.

Throughout my experience, I have had the privilege of providing counselling to diverse groups, including Couples, teenagers, young adolescents, and individuals. Working with young people is an area of passion for me, as I am acutely aware of the multifaceted challenges they face during their developmental years, encompassing both mental and physical aspects. My primary objective is to create a safe and nurturing environment for teenagers, students, and young adults, empowering them to navigate life’s highs and lows. In a world that often exerts pressure on hastening the transition into adulthood, it is crucial to pause and focus on the present moment, embracing personal growth, emotions, thoughts, and the transformative experiences that shape our identities, aspirations, and values.

In my therapeutic practice, I incorporate a blend of therapeutic modalities, prominently drawing from cognitive-behavioural therapy. I firmly believe that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours profoundly influence our perception of and engagement with the world. Striving for a balanced internal landscape is pivotal to unlocking life’s fullest potential and most enriching experiences.

From an early age, I harboured a profound sense of purpose in working with people, and it became evident that psychology would be the avenue through which I would realize my calling. Counselling enables me to guide individuals in reclaiming agency over their lives, whether it be by providing a non-judgmental space for self-expression, extending unwavering positive regard, or equipping them with indispensable tools for personal growth. Armed with an in-depth comprehension of the intricacies of the human mind, I am resolute in harnessing my expertise to facilitate greater self-understanding and self-empowerment in others.

Carl Rogers eloquently stated, “We think we listen, but very rarely do we listen with real understanding, true empathy… Yet listening of this very special kind is one of the most potent forces for change that I know.” These words deeply resonate with me and underscore the transformative potential of active and empathetic listening as a catalyst for positive change in people’s lives.
